Zero-click search describes the growing share of searches that end without the user visiting any website, because the answer is delivered directly on the results page. The concept was identified and popularized by Rand Fishkin (co-founder of Moz and later SparkToro), who traced the trend back to around 2011, when Google began answering more queries directly with features like weather boxes, calculators, and knowledge panels, and whose later clickstream studies showed zero-click searches climbing past 50% and then roughly two-thirds of all Google searches. Featured snippets accelerated the shift; AI Overviews and conversational AI answers have pushed it further still. When the engine synthesizes a complete answer, the user has no reason to click, but the brands cited or recommended inside that answer still capture attention, trust, and consideration. This reframes the goal of search visibility: instead of measuring success purely by clicks and sessions, brands must measure how often they are mentioned, cited, and recommended within the answers themselves. In a zero-click world, being part of the answer is the new equivalent of ranking first.
